Garden landscaping can renew a front bed, create privacy planting or bring greenery around a lawn and seating area. We consider the plants you want to keep, sunlight, soil, available growing space and how much ongoing care suits you.
At Ryde, the work included a feature garden, natural turf and irrigation. Our Leichhardt planting project renewed the garden beds and replaced worn artificial turf with natural lawn. Soil preparation, new planting, mulch and irrigation can be included to suit the agreed work.

Garden bed construction
Beds formed, levelled and edged, with drainage sorted so water moves through rather than sitting around the roots.
Plant selection
Species chosen against the light, exposure, soil and available space, with mature size accounted for with room for plants to mature and for ongoing access.
Hedging and screening
Screen planting set at spacings that will close up properly, with the soil volume and light checked against the height you are actually hoping for.
Mulching
Bark, sugar cane or pebble laid at a depth that holds moisture and suppresses weeds without piling up against stems and trunks.
Establishment irrigation
Where it is part of the scope, drip lines are run through new beds so the first season is manageable rather than a daily job with a hose.

How the planting work runs
Soil and drainage first, then plants, mulch and the first season

Assess the ground and the light
We check soil, drainage, compaction and how much sun each bed gets through the day, and note what existing planting is worth keeping.

Prepare the beds
Unwanted planting and old mulch come out, the soil is broken up and improved, levels are set and edges are formed before anything is planted.
- 03
Plant and mulch
Plants are set out, checked in position, planted at the right depth and spacing, watered in and mulched.

Set the garden up for its first season
Establishment irrigation is commissioned where it is part of the scope. Early watering needs depend on the plants, weather and soil moisture. We explain establishment care for the planting supplied, including how to check moisture and maintain mulch.

I wasn't sure where to start, so I discussed my backyard ideas and the required maintenance with Sam, who helped lay out options, plans, and estimates. Work included: • Building a new timber dividing fence (plus removing old, damaged fence) • Building a levelled trampoline area in the back corner, including relocation of some established plants • Re-turfing the backyard Sam also helped co-ordinate some dependent tradies' work (investigating existing sewage, with some replumbing required before the trampoline site was worked on). Garden landscaping questions
What homeowners ask about planting and establishment
Do you supply the plants?
Yes. Species, sizes and quantities form part of the planting scope, so what goes in is settled rather than left open. If you already have plants you want to use, discuss their suitability and condition when the planting is planned.
My soil is terrible. Is that a problem?
Soil condition is part of planning the garden. Compaction, drainage, available depth and the plants being considered determine what preparation is appropriate. A soil assessment is more useful than assuming every bed needs the same treatment.
Can you do a garden that does not need much work?
The work can be reduced considerably through species choice, spacing, mulch depth and how the beds are watered. Low-work is achievable; no-work is not, and it is worth knowing what a bed will ask of you before it goes in.
Does the old planting have to come out?
Some of it usually does. Clearing tired planting and old mulch is part of the scope where a project includes it, rather than something to sort out at the end. Healthy plants may be retained in place; relocation depends on the plant and site conditions.
Will you maintain the garden afterwards?
No. We build and establish gardens, but ongoing mowing, pruning and upkeep are not services we offer. It is worth arranging that separately before the first summer.
