Bring the outdoor space together
A makeover gives the garden a clearer purpose: somewhere to sit, space for everyday use and planting that belongs with the surfaces around it. Sound paving, established plants and other useful features can be retained where they fit the new layout.
Balmain brought artificial lawn, a pergola and stepping stones into one backyard. Rozelle shows a compact courtyard transformation, while Tempe combines a deck, lawn, planters and concrete access paths. Each started with a different space and a different set of changes.

Courtyards
Compact spaces where every square metre is visible. Drainage, shade, privacy and the size of the furniture you actually own drive the layout.

The path from the street to the door, where bins and cars go, and planting that holds its shape without constant attention.
Entertaining areas
A surface, a level and a connection to the back door that make the space usable. The surrounding planting and screening are planned with it.

Paving or decking around an existing pool, with grip, drainage and planting that will not drop constantly into the water.
Reducing the upkeep

How a makeover runs
One scope, from stripping back to the final planting

Look at the whole yard
We walk the space, check levels, drainage and access, and work out what is worth keeping and what has reached the end of its life.

Set the layout
Zones, levels, surfaces and planting are settled together, because in a makeover each one constrains the others and deciding them separately is what leaves a yard unresolved.
- 03
Strip back and rebuild
What has reached the end of its life comes out, then the excavation, drainage, structure and hard surfaces that the rest of the yard has to sit on.

Planting and finishes
Turf, beds and the detail work go in once the levels are settled and the ground beneath them has been prepared.

Outdoor makeover questions
What can stay, what can change and how the work fits together
Is design part of the makeover?
Yes. The layout, levels, materials and planting are worked out before anything is built, because a makeover starts from the whole space rather than from one corner of it. Any design documentation included is agreed as part of the project scope.
Can you keep what is already there?
Where it is worth keeping. Established trees, sound retaining and usable paving are usually better designed around than removed. Sometimes keeping something costs more across the job than replacing it, and that is worth saying plainly.
Does the old garden have to come out?
No. A makeover can renew selected areas or rebuild the whole yard. The condition of existing features and the proposed layout determine what can stay and what needs to change.
Do council approvals apply to a makeover?
Most planting and surface work does not raise them, but structures, level changes and work near boundaries can. Those requirements come from your council, so the current position for your address is worth confirming with them.
