A built-in planter needs enough growing space for the plants and enough access for the person caring for them. Start with those requirements before choosing its height, shape or finish.
Work from what you want to grow
Herbs, vegetables, shrubs and screening plants have different root-space and watering needs. Planting selected for a small box cannot be assumed to form a tall hedge later. Consider mature size, sunlight and the depth and volume of soil available.
A raised vegetable bed also needs comfortable reach. A bed accessible from only one side may need a different width from one that can be reached all around.
Compare genuine planter projects
The Ashfield vegetable planter was built as a focused growing area with irrigation considered in the scope.
The Glebe heritage courtyard uses curved recycled-brick planters along the courtyard edge. That form connects growing space with the surrounding surface and seating area.
The Tempe makeover includes timber planters within a wider backyard build. These examples show different materials and layouts serving different garden needs.
Plan drainage and the adjoining structure
Water needs a suitable route out of the growing area. Lining, waterproofing and protection of nearby walls or surfaces should be resolved before the planter is built. A drainage layer alone does not establish that the whole arrangement will drain appropriately.
For a planter above a building or other structure, confirm allowable loads and waterproofing requirements. Soil, retained water and the planter itself contribute to the weight.
Choose materials with care in mind
Brick, timber and other suitable finishes can relate to the house and garden. Their structural details, exposure and maintenance requirements vary. A timber planter may need appropriate lining and fixings; masonry also needs suitable construction and drainage details.
Allow access for watering, topping up mulch and tending the plants. Irrigation can be included where agreed, but still needs inspection and adjustment.
