A newly planted garden needs time and care to settle into its site. Plant selection and preparation matter, but the first season also depends on watering, weather and the condition of the growing area.
Start with suitable planting and soil
Plants should suit the available light, exposure, soil and mature growing space. Check compaction and drainage before planting, and choose any soil improvement for the actual conditions.
Planting depth and spacing depend on the plant and stock supplied. Avoid a single depth or spacing rule for every bed, and leave room for growth without blocking paths or seating.
Check moisture before following a routine
New root systems need appropriate moisture while they establish. The amount and frequency depend on weather, plant type, soil and how water reaches the roots. A fixed daily schedule may be too much for one bed and too little for another.
Follow the establishment advice for the plants supplied and check the soil moisture, including after rainfall. Pots, raised beds and in-ground planting can dry at different rates.
Maintain mulch and access
Mulch can help conserve moisture and reduce some weed growth. Keep it clear of stems and trunks, and check that it does not block irrigation or drainage points. Replace or adjust it as appropriate for the material and planting.
Leave access to tend the plants. A bed that cannot be reached without standing on neighbouring plants or climbing over furniture will be harder to care for.
Learn from a real garden renewal
Our Leichhardt front and poolside planting project renewed planted areas and replaced worn artificial turf with natural lawn. The young planting in the photographs has space around it to grow.
A fresh garden does not need to look fully mature on the day of installation. Planting too densely for an immediate effect can create competition and extra work later.
Observe changes and respond early
Check plants for drying, waterlogging, damage or unusual leaf changes. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so do not assume every struggling plant needs more water or fertiliser. The planting supplier or a suitable garden professional can help identify an issue.
