Synthetic turf, built-in bench seat, fence cladding and a pergola
The project
Courtyard Transformation
A cramped Rozelle courtyard rebuilt so the floor stayed clear. Synthetic turf edged in timber replaced the failing green area, a hardwood bench was built along the back fence instead of using loose furniture, the rear fence was clad in vertical grey timber, a charcoal-framed pergola with polycarbonate roofing went over the sitting area, and the hardwood decking was oiled.

What the site presented
Failed vertical garden
The vertical garden had died off, leaving dried-out planting across the main backdrop of the courtyard.
Rotting deck and debris
The timber deck had broken planks and plywood patches, and the space was collecting building debris and leaf litter.
No cover overhead
With no shelter from rain or direct sun, the courtyard could only be used in narrow conditions.
Furniture filling the floor
Without built-in seating, portable furniture took up most of an already small footprint.
What we built
Synthetic turf with timber edging
Synthetic turf edged in timber replaced the green area, for the shaded area where the previous lawn had struggled.
Built-in hardwood bench
A hardwood bench was built along the back fence so seating no longer sat on the floor area.
Vertical timber fence cladding
The rear fence was clad in vertical grey timber slats in place of the failed vertical garden.
Charcoal pergola with polycarbonate roof
A charcoal-framed pergola with polycarbonate roofing was installed, keeping light coming through while covering the sitting area.
