Outdoor Makeover
A compact Birchgrove yard rebuilt to get more out of a small footprint. Decking replaced the failing surfaces, custom screens were built where the neighbouring properties sit closest, the external walls were rendered, and a floating bench was fixed along one edge so the floor stayed clear of furniture.

What the site presented, and what was built
What the site presented
Very little floor area
The yard had to hold seating, greenery and circulation without any of them crowding the others.
Overlooked on more than one side
Neighbouring properties sit close, so screening had to be placed where the sightlines actually were.
Surfaces at the end of their life
The existing outdoor surfaces were worn and damaged and needed replacing rather than repairing.
What we built
Layout set before materials
The seating and circulation were set out first so the floor stayed usable, then the surfaces were chosen around it.
Custom privacy screens
Screens were built into the positions where the neighbouring properties overlook the yard, rather than around the whole boundary.
Decking and tiling
Deck boards and tiling were laid to connect the upper level and courtyard seating area.
