The lawn at this Glebe house had died back to bare, compacted soil. It was cut out with turf cutters, the base was conditioned for drainage and nutrients, and Sir Walter buffalo turf was laid, chosen for the shade the established cottage garden throws across the yard.

What the site presented
Lawn dead across the whole yard
What remained of the lawn was patchy and dead, leaving bare soil exposed.
Compacted ground
Years of wear had compacted the soil, so new turf laid straight over it would not have rooted.
What we built
Failed lawn cut out
Turf cutters were used to strip the failed lawn back to soil rather than laying over the top of it.
Soil conditioned, then Sir Walter laid
The base was conditioned for drainage and nutrients before Sir Walter buffalo turf was laid, chosen for its shade tolerance in this yard.
